From Tuesday, February 28 to Sunday, March 5, 2017, the North of Italy become a cutting-edge showcase of green thinking at the Green Week, promoted by VeneziePost, Università degli Studi di Trento, Fondazione Bruno Kessler, Fondazione Edmund Mach, MUSE-Museo delle Scienze e Trentino Sviluppo.

FBK is organizing the panel "Alternative fuels in the near future mobility." Luigi Crema participate as scientific coordinator of the Italian Hydrogen Mobility Plan.

ARES promotes GEOTERM final congress to present results and application of the research activities regarding methods of analysis and monitoring tools for the characterization of the subsurface and the design of geoexchange systems in the Alpine area.

The ability to store large amounts of electrical energy is of increasing importance with the growing fraction of electricity generation from intermittent renewable sources such as wind and solar. Solid-electrode batteries are drained far too soon, when discharged at their rated power, to economically fill the gaps in photovoltaic or wind temporal power profiles. Flow batteries show promise because the designer can independently scale the power (electrode area) and energy (arbitrarily large storage volume) components of the system by maintaining all electro-active species in fluids.

European Fuel Cell Technology & Application - Piero Lunghi Conference

ARES participate with the project STAR at the two days meeting of the ITPAR Scientific Committee inside the India – Trento Program for Advanced Research ITPAR III (2012-2015)

A seminar at territorial level to spread the knowledge concentrated solar power technologies for the production of renewable energy.

ARES unit will host PhD Sylvain Quoilin, researcher at the University of Liege and JRS Petten, for a seminar regarding Development and Applications of Organic Rankine Cycle.

ARES will be at the italian Energy Summit entitled "Europa Domani - Quale Energia per il futuro?" with an invited presentation about the research activity carried on in FBK in the energy domain, and in particular on distributed energy systems.

ARES will participate at the Technology Workshop on Solar Process Heat for Industry, organized in the framework of the joint task of IEA SHC Task 49 and Solar Paces IV on “Solar Heat Integration in Industrial Processes”.

ARES will be at SGI-SIMP 2014 Congress with a poster entitled "Seasonal heat storage systems in mountain regions: potential and feasibility of a pilot project in the Trento municipality" written in collaboration with University of Padova.

Innovation support

ARES has extensive experience in technology transfer and innovation support gained in numerous projects with industry partners, from the modelling of the technical solution until the development of a real demonstrator suitable for pre-industrial production.

Main activities

A smart building is a new way to build and manage our homes in order to make them more efficient and sustainable, integrated with renewable energy sources locally available in a reliable and secure way. It is fundamental to address this sector improving our buildings in environmental and sustainability profiles. At the same time, it is important the promotion of new models of interaction and the creation of awareness in our communities regarding energy saving methodologies: working together with households, schools, companies, governments and no-profit organisations we could create smart communities able to educate each citizen to use less energy, reducing energy bills and contributing to improve the environment.

Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) is a technology that produces electricity by concentrating sunlight onto a small area. A major advantage of the CSP plants is that they generate power reducing carbon dioxide emissions, especially during grid peak demand. By this way, CSP can potentially displace the use of fossil fuel plants that emit the greenhouse gases that causes climate change. Nowadays, large-scale research efforts are necessary to improve performances of CSP technology, in order to reduce technology development costs and foster a global market penetration, making this technology profitable and compatible as an alternative source of clean energy.


CH2P aims at building a transition technology for early infrastructure deployment, developing a new technology for the future network of HRS, using widely available carbon-lean natural gas (NG) or bio-methane to produce hydrogen and power through Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) technology. Luigi Crema, Head of the ARES, is the project coordinator.

ARES attend the two days kick-off meeting of the INSHIP project in Brussels (Belgium).

Online the geothermal map of Trentino. The work, presented yesterday during a technical conference at Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) in Trento, is the result of the GEOTERM project and is now available in WebGIS mode.

ARES partecipate at Trento Smart City Week

Michael J. Aziz will be at FBK in the context of the collaboration with Green Energy Storage, a company that has engaged in the industrial development of organic batteries and assigned to FBK the research and innovation activities.

SolarTech, the project proposed by ARES Research Unit managed by Luigi Crema, aim to move from research to the market a CSP solar energy technology able to provide electricity and thermal energy for residential and industrial applications.  

ARES, as scientific coordinator, takes part in working groups of "Mobilità Idrogeno Italia" which was held in Venice in order to advance the work on the National Plan for hydrogen based mobility in Italy.

Luigi Crema participate at the event organized in collaboration with the University of Trento entitled "R.E.D.S. 2ALPS - Flowing Knowledges".

INSHIP aims at the definition of a European Common Research and Innovation Agenda (ECRIA) engaging the major European research institutes with relevant and recognized activities on Solar Heat for Industrial Processes (SHIP) in order to foster the development and production of these technologies in the industrial sector.

GEOTERM project aims to assess the suitability and potential of the territory of the Autonomous Province of Trento to widely host plants of heat exchange with the ground-coupled heat pump for air conditioning, promoting the responsible and sustainable development of this technology in order to contribute at the goals of the H2020 program.

TourisTrack is an industrial research project to develop an innovative platform to help and simplify the search and rescue mission (SAR) in mountainous and wild areas.

FBK – ARES will provide a contribution for the realization of the MIT – MEL connected home that became a demonstration site for innovative energy technologies and systems

The BIOPATH project will perform a full lifecycle assessment (FLA) in the specific ambitious field of biomass resources and all the value chain related to their use for energy generation / conversion.

CMagnetico aimed at the development of a user friendly interface and software to calculate the magnetic induction field produced by electrical power transmission lines.

MISTICO will develop a new system of m-CHP based on hybrid CPV (Concentrated Photo Voltaic) systems to improve the overall efficiency of a CPV cell by the application of new materials and new technological layout.

SolTec realize a new concept of solar driven cooling/heating machine based on a double adsorption/desorption cycle for heating and cooling of households.

BioDomUs has the objective to develop a demonstrative domestic unit for the cogeneration of electrical and thermal power from domestic stoves.

BioTec has the objective to exploit an efficient energy conversion of biomass wastes from the agriculture and forestry sector at territorial level.

Steinex project goal was the development of an innovative safety system prototype for stone cutting machines.

Eurostandard project aims at the development of security systems to be applied for the automatic shut-off of gas leaks following the breaking of the pipes.

Tools and facilities

This laboratory is equipped for the management of electrical and thermal power generation.
It is organized in two different working space: the first is dedicated for electrical generation and combustion and the second dedicated to thermal energy generation and storage.

The Sustainable Connected Home is a Smart Building Facility as a full scale living laboratory. It has an internal surface of about 32 square meters and it’s provided of integrated solar-biomass energy system.
The living laboratory is oriented to test innovative Energy and ICT technologies in a real environment. It has been jointly developed by FBK, MIT Boston and CNR Ivalsa.
